Hank Thompson is a former high-school baseball star who can no longer play, but otherwise things seem to be going well for him: a girlfriend he loves, a job tending bar at a New York dive, and his favourite team suddenly on course to win the championship.

When his punk neighbour Russ asks him to look after his cat for a couple of days, Hank is suddenly dragged into an insane story involving several gangster outfits. They all want something from him — the trouble is, Hank has no idea what. To break out of the trap, Hank will have to use every bit of his ingenuity just to stay alive long enough to work out what is going on.
